Deputy Castillo was killed in an automobile accident on Southwest Loop 1604, between Nelson and Pearsall roads, while responding to an officer needs assistance call at 1:30 am. His patrol car went out of control on the rain-slicked road and struck a tree, causing his legs to be pinned in the vehicle and trapping him inside. As rescue crews attempted to free him from the patrol car it burst into flames. In an attempt to save his co-workers, Deputy Castillo pushed them away from the fire. He perished in the fire.

Deputy Castillo, 31, was a native of Victoria and had worked for the Sheriffs Office for eight years, with the last four years in the patrol division.

Deputy Castillo was All-State Middle Linebacker for Victoria High School in 1979 and attended Texas A&M University in Kingsville, Texas. Survivors included a daughter of San Antonio; parents Jesse V. & Candida Castillo; brothers Manuel, Ernest, Julian & Richard Castillo; and sisters Lupe Tamayo, Janie Gonzalez, Alice Castillo & Michele Castillo.
