Officer Rodriguez had stopped to direct traffic at the scene of an accident on Interstate 35 just south of US 90 interchange. Officer Rodriguez exited his vehicle with a flashlight in hand and began directing traffic. A car entering the expressway from the nearby Theo Avenue ramp pulled around a slower-moving vehicle and immediately collided with one of the vehicles involved in the prior accident. The vehicle that entered the expressway glanced off the wrecked vehicle and struck Deputy Rodriguez. Officer Rodriguez died at Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center from his injuries.

He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Maria Rose Rodriguez, mother and stepfather, Juan & Petra Martinez of San Antonio; daughter, Rosalinda Garcia, Veronica Castillo, San Antonio; Judy Salinas, Austin, Joyce Dodge, New Orleans, La; brothers, Johnny & Raymond Martinez, San Antonio, and Arnulfo Martinez, Wisconsin; 6 grandchildren. Interment was at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors. ----source San Antonio Express News
